Hematuria, also known as blood in the urine, is a common condition that may be the first sign of other medical issues including: infection, kidney stone, and occasionally urologic cancers. Many people have no pain when they develop hematuria. Others may notice burning or kidney pain.
It is important to see a urologist for further evaluation if you see blood in your urine, even if this is only a one time occurrence, as waiting could delay a life-saving cancer diagnosis.
If you experience hematuria, you may need an office based procedure called cystoscopy which involves placing a small camera through the urethra into the bladder. Other testing includes specialized urine testing and imaging including ultrasound or CT scan.
Rest assured that many sources of hematuria are treatable if caught early. Please reach out to our office if you are experiencing blood in your urine.

Hematuria is the medical term for blood in the urine. When people experience blood in their urine, it may be visible to the naked eye in which case it is referred to as GROSS hematuria. When the blood is only visible under a microscope, it is referred to as MICROSCOPIC.
