Urinary incontinence is a common condition that can have a significant impact on quality of life. It refers to the loss of control over urination, which can lead to embarrassing and inconvenient situations. There are two main types of incontinence: stress and urge.
Stress incontinence occurs when there is a loss of support to the bladder and urethra, leading to leakage during physical activity or coughing, sneezing, or laughing. This type of incontinence is often result of childbearing.
Urge incontinence, on the other hand, is characterized by a sudden and overwhelming need to urinate, followed by leakage. This is often associated with urinary frequency and sometimes getting up at night.
Dr. Ebel offers a range of treatment options for both stress and urge incontinence. See below for a description of potential options.
Urethral Bulking: Urethral bulking with the new Bulkamid hydrogel may be an option for your stress incontinence if it is associated with sphincter weakness. Bulkamid can be injected in office and takes a matter of minutes to place. Long-term follow-up has shown up to 7 years of improvement with this procedure. Click HERE for more information on Bulkamid.
Robotic Burch Colposuspension: Before the days of mesh slings, colposuspension (or using sutures to tie up the urethra and bladder neck) was a common procedure for incontinence. Unfortunately, it was invasive and required a large incision to perform. For this reason, mesh became the most common anti-incontinence procedure in the US and has remained so. Now with advancements in technology, Burch Colposuspension can be performed in a minimally invasive way with the Da Vinci surgical platform. This greatly reduces the recovery time, pain, and bleeding when compared to the old technique. Findlay is one of the few places in Ohio where the Burch procedure is performed in high volumes.
NeuroStimulation: The lower part of your back (the sacrum) is the control center for your bladder. By stimulating the nerves in this area, you can regain your bladder control. The Axonics system allows for stimulation of these nerves using a contained and rechargeable system which can be placed with very small incisions in your lower back. Click HERE for more information on Axonics.

While mesh slings may be a good option for some women, mesh implantation has been associated with erosion and pelvic pain and many women are very reasonably concerned about having mesh inserted.
Dr. Ebel is happy to truly listen to your concerns and help you make the decision that is best for you.
