Many men with bothersome urinary symptoms (BPH) either have unsatisfactory improvement with common medications (such as Flomax) or experience side effects of these oral therapies. At the same time, they may no be ready to make the jump to a more aggressive prostate surgery such as the traditional TURP procedure which requires a hospital stay and has sexual side effects.
In order to meet the needs of these men, a new category of treatments called MIST procedures has been introduced over the past decades. This class of procedures includes the now well established UroLift procedure and Rezum water vapor therapy.
When deciding which MIST therapy is best for you, it is important to factor in your overall goals, desired recovery experience, and take into account your specific prostate configuration.
Rezum is well studied in men with a less common form of prostate growth involving a third, or middle/median lobe, which not only predicts worse medication response but is also a procedural difficulty for UroLift.
Other reasons to consider Rezum over UroLift is the superior reported 5 year outcomes which showed only a 4.4% retreatment rate after Rezum compared to UroLift's 13.6%.
The recovery after Rezum can be more difficult, however. Due to the short term inflammation after Rezum, all patients will require a catheter for one week following the procedure. There can also be lingering irritation with urination while you heal.
If you are bothered by BPH symptoms or interested in Rezum, please reach out and schedule an appointment and my team would be happy to help you in making the best choice for you and your prostate.
